Repentance and Mercy

Alma 9:24-25

"For behold, the promises of the Lord are extended to the Lamanites, but they are not unto you if ye transgress; for has not the Lord expressly promised and firmly decreed, that if ye will rebel against him that ye shall utterly be destroyed from off the face of the earth?

And now for this cause, that ye may not be destroyed, the Lord has sent his angel to visit many of his people, declaring unto them that they must go forth and cry mightily unto this people, saying: Repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is nigh at hand;"

The Lord keeps his promises. He will destroy you if you willfully rebel against him. He has mercy though. He will send prophets to declare to you how to avoid destruction. He does not want to destroy His children. He loves us all so much and wants us to be happy. If we but do what He tells us, we will not be destroyed.

Immediate Obedience

Alma 7:18

"Now it came to pass that after Alma had received his message from the angel of the Lord he returned speedily to the land of Ammonihah. And he entered the city by another way, yea, by the way which is on the south of the city of Ammonihah."

Alma had just been kicked out of the city of Ammonihah because the people did not want religion in their city. He was on his way elsewhere when an angel commanded him to return and warn the people to repent. Even though it was probably a scary thing for Alma to do, he 'returned speedily.' He knew it was most important to follow God's commands. His fears did not matter, so he obeyed.

How to Live

Alma 7:23

"And now I would that ye should be humble, and be submissive and gentle; easy to be entreated; full of patience and long-suffering; being temperate in all things; being diligent in keeping the commandments of God at all times; asking for whatsoever things ye stand in need, both spiritual and temporal; always returning thanks unto God for whatsoever things ye do receive."

Alma urges the people to live righteously. To be humble, submissive, gentle, patient, temperate, diligent in keeping the commandments, asking for needs, and always full of gratitude to God. These are all Christ-like qualities that we should all strive to have. I want to be these things, and I know that I will be a much happier person if I live to have these qualities.

gathering together

Alma 6:6

"Nevertheless the children of God were commanded that they should gather themselves together oft, and join in fasting and mighty prayer in behalf of the welfare of the souls of those who knew not God."

The Saints in this time would meet together often for church and fasting. We still do this today! This is a true commandment from God, and it brings so many blessings. As we gather we strengthen our convictions and have a stronger Spirit with us. Miracles happen through fasting.

Work for your testimony

Alma 5:26

"And now behold, I say unto you, my brethren, if ye have experienced a change of heart, and if ye have felt to sing the song of redeeming love, I would ask, can ye feel so now?"

Alma teaches the importance of remembering, and working each day to have the Spirit. Life changing experiences do not happen each day, so they should be cherished and remembered. Even though these experiences happen, we change. It is important to never let our testimony dwindle because we are changing.

Humble birth

Luke 2:7

"And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."

Jesus Christ was born to such humble beginnings. He was born in a stable, where animals lived. He, a holy being, came to earth in great humility. How can we ever have pride when our Savior was so humble?

Continually repenting

Alma 4:14

"Looking forward to that day, thus retaining a remission of their sins; being filled with great joy because of the resurrection of the dead, according to the will and power and deliverance of Jesus Christ from the bands of death."

This verse tells of the importance of continually repenting. Christ will come again, and we do not know when that will be. Thus, we need to be prepared all the time. We must repent everyday and try to be better each day. It is a continual process, one that brings joy!

Agency

Alma 3:19

"Now I would that ye should see that they brought upon themselves the curse; and even so doth every man that is cursed bring upon himself his own condemnation."

God doesn't just curse us, we make bad choices and these choices curse/condemn us. We can choose who we want to serve, and if we choose to serve anyone other than God, we curse ourselves to have a miserable life.

God Answers Prayers

Alma 2:28

Nevertheless, the Nephites being strengthened by the hand of the Lord, having prayed mightily to him that he would deliver them our of the hands of their enemies, therefore the Lord did hear their cries, and did strengthen them, and the Lamanites and the Amlicites did fall before them."

The Nephites were going against a numerous host of Lamanites and Amlicites. It is such a miracle that they were able to stand against them and defeat them! The Lord knew what they were going through and helped them through it. The Lord, likewise, knows what I am going through and will help me if I pray to Him and ask in earnest and with faith.

Mosiah 28:3

"Now they were desirous that salvation should be declared to every creature, for they could not bear that any human soul should perish; yea, even the very thoughts that any soul should endure endless torment did cause them to quake and tremble."

In chapter 27 Alma and the sons of Mosiah were visited by and angel and were brought back to the light. They were so wicked, and so unhappy in their awful state. Since they experienced such a joyful change they wanted all people to have what they had. Thus, they were desirous to preach the gospel to the Lamanites. They had so much love for all man that they wanted to share true joy with them. They were the best missionaries, because they were truly concerned for the welfare of their brothers and sisters.

Mosiah 27:35-37

"And they traveled throughout all the land of Zarahemla, and among all the people who were under the reign of king Mosiah, zealously striving to repair all the injuries which they had done to the church, confessing all their sins, and publishing all the things which they had seen, and explaining the prophecies and the scriptures to all who desired to hear them.

And thus they were instruments in the hands of God in bringing many to the knowledge of  truth, yea, to the knowledge of their Redeemer.

And how blessed are they! For they did publish peace; they did publish good tidings of good; and they did declare unto the people that the Lord reigneth."

Alma and the sons of Mosiah were wickedly destroying the church. In answer to many prayers, they were visited by an angel of the Lord. After this visitation they realized their wickedness and truly repented and came unto Christ. They did not stop there though! They went throughout the land and fixed the wrongs they did. They became peacemakers as they published the peace of the gospel. It is so wonderful how we can change and become more and more like the Savior. No matter our background.

Mosiah 26:30

"Yea, and as often as my people repent will I forgive them their trespasses against me."

The Lord will forgive us if we repent. He will always forgive us if we truly repent and change. We likewise need to be willing to forgive people.

Sunday, December 8, 2013

Mosiah 25:24

"And they were called the people of God. And the Lord did pour out his Spirit upon them, and they were blessed, and prospered in the land."

These people were righteous. They did what God wanted them to do. Thus they were able to have the Holy Ghost with them and they were blessed.

Saturday, December 7, 2013

Mosiah 23:15

"Thus did Alma teach his people, that every man should love his neighbor as himself, that there should be no contention among them."

If everyone lived this way, the world would be a much happier, peaceful place. We should all try to love our neighbors.

Thursday, December 5, 2013

Mosiah 20:11

"And it came to pass that the people of Limhi began to drive the Lamanites before them; yet they were not half so numerous as the Lamanites. But they fought for their lives, and for their wives, and for their children; therefore they exerted themselves and like dragons did they fight."

These people acted out of love for their families. The men of Limhi protected their selves, their wives, and their children. They knew what was important in life and fought for it. I love that!

D&C 115:4

"For thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

The Lord named his church. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints truly is his church. It was not created or names by a man. It was created by Jesus Christ.

Tuesday, December 3, 2013

Mosiah 19:8

"And now the king was not so much concerned about his people as he was about his own life; nevertheless, Gideon did spare his life."

This king received mercy from Gideon because he talked about the safety of his people. The king used this trickery to save himself. In reality he did not care about his people at all! He just did not want to die. This is how Satan works, too. He does not care for anyone but himself and will use you for his own benefit.

Mosiah 18:9

"Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life-"

These are some of the covenants we make at baptism. We are willing to help others through love, and to always bear witness of the Lord. I love the phrase "even until death." No matter what happens, we should not deny our faith.

Helaman 14:13

"And if ye shall believe on his name ye will repent of all your sins, that thereby ye may have a remission of them through his merits."

Samuel the Lamanite taught the Nephites about Jesus. Everyone can repent and turn to Christ to become clean. Christ died for all of us, and he made it possible to have eternal life and happiness.

Friday, November 29, 2013

Mosiah 17:20

"And now, when Abinadi had said these words, he fell, having suffered death by fire; yea, having been put to death because he would not deny the commandments of God, having sealed the truth of his words by his death."

Abinadi was protected from death until he finished preaching. When he finished, King Noah condemned Abinadi to death. Abinadi did not fear death, because he did what God wanted him to do. He was not sinful. This martyrdom shows how dedicated Abinadi was to his God. He gave his all to the Lord.

Mosiah 14:4-5

"Surely he has borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."

Abinadi quotes Isaiah in these verses. Christ suffered all things. He knows all our griefs, sorrows, and pains. He willingly suffered these things because he loves us. He wants us to repent, be clean, and return to him.

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

Mosiah 13:3

"Touch me not, for God shall smite you if ye lay your hands upon me, for I have not delivered the message which the Lord sent me to deliver; neither have I told you that which ye requested that I should tell; therefore, God will not suffer that I shall be destroyed at this time."

Abinadi knew who to serve. He did not fear the threats of the King and Priests. Rather, he trusted in God. Abinadi was spared so he could finish the message he was commanded to share. He had so much faith and was protected by divine help. He knew what he was supposed to do, and he did it.

Mosiah 11:14

"And it came to pass that he placed his heart upon his riches, and he spent his time in riotous living with his wives and his concubines; and so did also his priests spend their time with harlots."

What a waste of time! King Noah was a terrible man. He placed brutal taxes on the people to support his laziness and sin. He only cared about himself and pleasing his carnal desires. He is so disgusting to me!

Mosiah 9:3

"...but we were smitten with famine and sore afflictions; for we were slow to remember the Lord our God."

This is a common theme in the Book of Mormon. When the people are following the Lord they are prosperous, but when they are not following the Lord they have sore afflictions. It is much better to follow God!

Saturday, November 23, 2013

Mosiah 7:33

"But if ye will turn to the Lord with full purpose of heart, and put your trust in him, and serve him with all diligence of mind, if ye do this, he will, according to his own will and pleasure, deliver you out of bondage."

When we are faithful and keep the commandments and covenants we have made, the Lord gives us protection. He has the power to deliver us from our hard times and struggles. We just need to do our part and ask.

Thursday, November 21, 2013

Mosiah 4:15

"But ye will teach them to walk in the ways of truth and soberness; ye will teach them to love one another, and to serve one another."

King Benjamin is talking to parents in this verse. He encourages us to teach our children the gospel so they do not wander down Satan's path. Teach them to love each other and to serve. The best way to teach these things is by example. If my children see me serving someone, they are more likely to serve throughout their life.

Wednesday, November 20, 2013

Mosiah 3:12

"But wo, wo unto him who knoweth that he rebelleth against God! For salvation cometh to none such except it be through repentance and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ."

You cannot justify leaving your faith. There is no way around this truth, that you cannot have salvation if you rebel against God. It's scary how many people have done this and are waiting this judgement.

Tuesday, November 19, 2013

Mosiah 2:37

"I say unto you, that the man that doeth this, the same cometh out in open rebellion against God; therefore he listeth to obey the evil spirit, and becometh an enemy to all righteousness; therefore, the Lord has no place in him, for he dwelleth not in unholy temples."

When we let pride take over our hearts and do things that are contrary to the Spirit, we let Satan take over. We shut out the Lord. I like how this verse clarifies why the Lord does not dwell in unholy places. It's not that the Lord goes away, it's that we have no place for him. We choose not to allow his influence in our lives, rather than him abandoning us.

3 Nephi 5:4

"And now it came to pass that when they had taken all the robbers prisoners, insomuch that none did escape who were not slain, they did cast their prisoners into prison, and did cause the word of God to be preached unto them; and as many as would repent of their sins and enter into a covenant that they would murder no more were set at liberty."

This is a great way to deal with robbers and other law breakers. Preach the gospel to them and let them decide what they want to do with their lives. The gospel is the only thing that can take away the influence of Satan.

Mosiah 1: 6-7

"O my sons, I would that ye should remember that these sayings are true, and also that these records are true. And behold, also the plates of Nephi, which contain the records and the sayings of our fathers from the time they left Jerusalem until now, and they are true; and we can know of their surety because we have them before our eyes.
And now, my sons, I would that ye should remember to search them diligently, that ye may profit thereby; and I would that ye should keep the commandments of God, that ye may prosper in the land according to the promises which the Lord made unto our fathers."

The scriptures are true, and if we read and study them daily we will be blessed. With reading and studying, we can apply the teachings, warnings, and prophesies from the scriptures to our current situations in life. I know that as I have read and studied these precious words I have felt a stronger Spirit with me and a greater capacity to keep the commandments today.

Words of Mormon 1:7

"And I do this for a wise purpose; for thus it whispereth me, according to the workings of the Spirit of the Lord which is in me. And now, I do not know all things; but the Lord knoweth all things which are to come; wherefore, he worketh in me to do according to his will."

Mormon had the Spirit with him. Because he had this companionship he knew to include extra plates in the records he had. This was essential to replace the 116 pages that were lost by Martin Harris. The Lord knew that he needed to preserve these extra plates, and he told Mormon this through the Holy Ghost. That Spirit still whispers to us and helps us fulfill God's will.

Omni 1:6

"For the Lord would not suffer, after he had led them out of the land of Jerusalem and kept and preserved them from falling into the hands of their enemies, yea, he would not suffer that the words should not be verified, which he spake unto our fathers, saying that: Inasmuch as ye will not keep my commandments ye shall not prosper in the land."

The Lord will keep his word. He will not let consequences fall away. There are always consequences for our choices, and since these people were not keeping his commandments they did not prosper. He keeps his word.

Jarom 1:11

"Wherefore, the prophets, and the priests, and the teachers, did labor diligently, exhorting with all long-suffering the people to diligence; teaching the law of Moses, and the intent for which it was given; persuading them to look forward unto the Messiah, and believe in him to come as though he already was. And after this manner did they teach them."

I love the diligence these teachers had. I love that although these people were teaching of Christ before Christ was born, they taught as though he already was. Christ's mission and atonement applies to all time. He existed before he was born, and he still exists and will come again.

Enos 1:15

"Wherefore, I knowing that the Lord God was able to preserve our records, I cried unto him continually, for he had said unto me: Whatsoever thing ye shall ask in faith, believing that ye shall receive in the name of Christ, ye shall receive."

Enos prayed for himself, for his people, and for his enemies. He also prayed that the records, the scriptures, would be preserved so that they would bless future generations. Enos was full of charity towards all men and desired all to feel the peace that the Savior has to offer. I am grateful he prayed to have the records preserved, because they give me so much peace today.

3 Nephi 4:10

"But in this thing they were disappointed, for the Nephites did not fear them; but they did fear their God and did supplicate him for protection; therefore, when the armies of Giddianhi did rush upon them they were prepared to meet them; yea, in the strength of the Lord they did receive them."

The Nephites had the strength of the Lord with them as they battled the Gadianton robbers. No wonder they were so victorious. God is always the winner in battles against evil. When he is on our side we will never lose!

Jacob 5:48

"And it came to pass that the servant said unto his master: Is it not the loftiness of thy vineyard- have not the branches thereof overcome the roots which are good? And because the branches have overcome the roots thereof, behold they grew faster than the strength of the roots, taking strength unto themselves. Behold, I say, is not this the cause that the trees of thy vineyard have become corrupted?"

Loftiness, or pride, is the reason for destruction. Pride here is not heeding the counsel of the scriptures and the faith of past generations. When generations think they do not need the righteous traditions of the past, they are ripe for destruction. They become corrupt. This is so prevalent today.

Jacob 4:10

"Wherefore, brethren, seek not to counsel the Lord, but to take counsel from his hand. For behold, ye yourselves know that he counseleth in wisdom, and in justice, and in great mercy, over all his works."

It is a dangerous place to be when trying to change what the Lord has said, or to make him say what you want him to say. The Lord will not change his ways because we want him to. He knows what is right, what is best, and what is true. Why would we want any other way? He works in wisdom, justice, and mercy! He created us, and the earth, and everything we see! He knows our potential, and his ways help us reach that divine potential.

Jacob 3:7

"Behold, their husbands love their wives, and their wives love their husbands; and their husbands and their wives love their children; and their unbelief and their hatred towards you is because of the iniquity of their fathers; wherefore, how much better are you than they, in the sight of your great Creator?"

The Nephites at this time were committing infidelity. The Lamanites were not. Even though the Lamanites were not living gospel standards, they were faithful to their families. We do not know people's backgrounds or circumstances, so it is better not to judge them.

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

Jacob 2:28

"For I, the Lord God, delight in the chastity of women. And whoredoms are an abomination before me; thus saith the Lord of Hosts."

There are so many women in the world today who are completely unchaste. They pose nude for photos, they wear practically nothing in public, and they sleep with whoever they want. It is all over the media, especially in television shows and movies. It is disgusting! The Lord does not think it is ok. It is abominable before him. Don't be fooled by what the world is doing, because in the end what the Lord thinks is what matters.

2 Nephi 33:1

"And now I, Nephi, cannot write all the things which were taught among my people; neither am I mighty in writing, like unto speaking; for when a man speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost the power of the Holy Ghost carrieth it unto the hearts of the children of men."

When Nephi spoke he spoke with the Holy Ghost, and that Spirit was felt by the hearts of the listeners. Although I was not there to hear him preach, I can read his prophesies. If I have the Holy Ghost with me as I read, these words will be carried unto my heart and I can feel the original strength of these words.

Helaman 13: 4

"And it came to pass that they would not suffer that he should enter into the city; therefore he went and got upon the wall thereof, and stretched forth his hand and cried with a loud voice, and prophesied unto the people whatsoever things the Lord put into his heart."

Samuel, a Lamanite, was commanded of the Lord to preach unto the Nephites. He tried to get into their city to preach, but they wouldn't let him in.  He gave a good effort, and I feel like some would have given up at that point. Not Samuel. He climbed upon the city walls and shouted his prophesies to the people. He did not give up! He knew that the Lord trusted him to preach, and so he did. I admire how he persevered and did what the Lord wanted him to do.

2 Nephi 28:28

"And in fine, wo unto all those who tremble, and are angry because of the truth of God! For behold, he that is built upon the rock receiveth it with gladness; and he that is built upon a sandy foundation trembleth lest he shall fall."

This verse is so simple, but so important! At lease twice a year we hear from the Prophet and the Apostles. They speak the word of God in these latter days. People who are firm in their faith receive their words with gladness, knowing that they are from God. Others do not like the words, because they are not as strong, or don't want to be. I hope that I am always built upon the rock of my Savior so that I won't question the words of God.

2 Nephi 27:20

"Then shall the Lord God say unto him: The learned shall not read them, for they have rejected them, and I am able to do mine own work; wherefore thou shalt read the words which I shall give unto thee."

Joseph Smith was an unlearned boy, but the Lord was able to translate the Book of Mormon through him. The Lord can carry out his will no matter what. He works miracles.

2 Nephi 26:30

"...wherefore, the Lord God hath given a commandment that all men should have charity, which charity is love. And except they should have charity they were nothing. Wherefore, if they should have charity they would not suffer the laborer in Zion to perish."

Charity is a great thing to have. It is pure love, Christ's love. It is not giving up on people, serving someone, helping cheer up someone, and so much more. It is a lifestyle of love.

2 Nephi 25:26

"And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins."

It's all about Christ. Happiness, Life, Purpose, Service, Family. All things are about him and his beautiful sacrifice for us. He loves us so much. He is where true salvation is founded. We, as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, talk, rejoice, prophesy, and write of him. We love him. We teach our children of him so they can love him. So they can know how to repent and receive forgiveness. So they can become clean and pure before him.

Tuesday, October 29, 2013

2 Nephi 23:22

"...yea, for I will be merciful unto my people, but the wicked shall perish."

This will happen in the Second Coming. The Lord will save his people, those who are faithful to him and live righteously. The wicked, those who follow Satan, will be destroyed. This is his word, and he cannot go against it. It is so important to follow Christ. I do not want to be destroyed.

Monday, October 28, 2013

Helaman 10:11-12

"And now behold, I command you, that ye shall go and declare unto this people, that thus saith the Lord God, who is the Almighty: Except ye shall repent ye shall be smitten, even unto destruction.

And behold, now it came to pass that when the Lord had spoken these words unto Nephi, he did stop and did not go unto his own house, but did return unto the multitudes who were scattered about upon the face of the land, and began to declare unto them the word of the Lord which had been spoken unto him, concerning their destruction if they did not repent."

Previously, Nephi was preaching to the people and many did not believe him. Many wanted to put him in jail. So, Nephi went home and pondered what the Lord had helped him with. As he traveled home he received this commandment from God that he should continue to preach. Nephi immediately turned around and returned to preach repentance unto the people. Nephi was obedient immediately. He did not go home first, rather he followed the command right then and there.

2 Nephi 19:6

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called, Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

Christ has so many names, all of which tell a bit about who he is. He is a wonderful being. He listens and soothes as a counselor would. He is powerful and mighty and can do anything. He is our Father and our bringer of peace.

 Romans 8:16

"The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God"

This is my part in the primary program this year. I will then ask the sunbeams (3 and 4 year olds) how they know that God knows and loves them. They tell of the things they have and are grateful. They know that they have those things, things like their bodies and their families, because God loves them and wants them to be happy.

2 Nephi 15:20

"Wo unto them that call evil good, and good evil, that put darkness for light, and light for darkness, that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!"

There are so many people today who think that evil things are okay. That it is okay to sin. That there is no consequence for it. That is not true. Sinning is never okay, and God will judge. Just because some evils are legal, and many people do them, it does not make them right in the sight of God.

2 Nephi 12:8

"Their land is also full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made."

Knowing my nothingness compared to God, I cannot imagine worshiping something I made rather than worshiping him. Although I would not religiously worship something I made, I can see myself boasting in my workmanship. I sew a lot, craft a lot, and make some cool things. I like the things I make, and that is totally okay. I just cannot become prideful of those things, I cannot brag about how awesome I am because I make cool things with my hands.  That is not technically idol worship, but it is still not good.

2 Nephi 11:7

"For if there be no Christ there be no God; and if there be no God we are not, for there could have been no creation. But there is a God, and he is Christ, and he cometh in the fulness of his own time."

Like Jacob, the author of this verse, I know there is a Christ. I know that he created me. I know that he created this world for me.  He loves me, as he loves everyone. I know that I am here because I was given the opportunity to have a body and experience mortality. On this earth I can choose who I want to be, and how I want to live eternally.  I can choose to follow my Savior and be eternally happy, or I can choose to not follow him and be eternally unhappy. I know that Jesus Christ will come to this earth again, and that time is sooner than ever. I do not know when that time is, but I know I am looking forward to it. I am trying to live my life in a way that he would be pleased with me. I do not want to waste my precious time here. I want him to be grateful for how I have used my life, a life he gave to me. I know he lives, I know he will come again, and I know he loves me.

2 Nephi 9:29

But to be learned is good if they hearken unto the counsels of God."

It is so good to have knowledge and to continually seek learning. It is more important to hearken, to listen and act upon, the counsels of God. God loves us so much and will only command us to do things that will improve us and bring us happiness.

Helaman 8:3

"For behold, Nephi had spoken unto them concerning the corruptness of their law; yea, many things did Nephi speak which cannot be written; and nothing did he speak which was contrary to the commandments of God."

Nephi doesn't hold anything back as he tells the wicked that they need to stop being evil. He tells them exactly what is right and that their works are the works of the devil. He was very bold and clear as he spoke with the Spirit. Today there are many leaders who speak boldly and truthfully. They are not going against God, rather they are speaking on His behalf.

2 Nephi 6:13

"Wherefore, they that fight against Zion and the covenant people of the Lord shall lick up the dust of their feet; and the people of the Lord shall not be ashamed. For the people of the Lord are they who wait for him; for they still wait for the coming of the Messiah."

I am one of these covenant people.  I have made sacred covenants with the Lord, and I am waiting and preparing for the second coming of my Savior Jesus Christ. I am not ashamed of this, because I know it is true and I know that Christ is my Redeemer. He suffered for me because He loves me and wants me to follow His example.

2 Nephi 5:17

"And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did cause my people to be industrious, and to labor with their hands."

The Nephites were not a lazy people. They knew how to grow food, build buildings, and do everything they needed to do. They did not expect things to just be given to them, rather they worked hard for all they had.

2 Nephi 4:16

"Behold, my soul delighteth in the things of the Lord; and my heart pondereth continually upon the things which I have seen and heard."

Nephi continually pondered spiritual matters, and I am sure this is why he was so close to the Spirit and had so much power. I'm sure since he thought about the gospel often that it was easier for him to choose the right and follow God's plan. It was probably easier for him to resist temptation and do good things. I need to ponder more on spiritual things.

2 Nephi 2:25

"Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy"

Adam and Eve were commanded not to partake of the fruit of the tree of knowledge, but they did. They partook so that they could know good from evil. They realized the importance of this knowledge and decided it was necessary to their mortal existence. Because they did, this they were able to have children and live a life where they could experience true joy. Living as a family is the best joy! Also, they were able to know evil, and knowing what is bad makes the good so much sweeter.

2 Nephi 1:27

"And it must needs be that the power of God must be with him, even unto his commanding you that ye must obey. But behold, it was not he, but it was the Spirit of the Lord which was in him, which opened his mouth to utterance that he could not shut it."

Lehi is teaching his sons Laman and Lemuel that Nephi was not commanding them because he felt like it. Rather, Nephi was a prophet of God filled with His Spirit. Nephi talked with the power of God. His words were the words of the Lord. Laman and Lemuel did not understand that their brother was speaking on behalf of deity, just as all true prophets do.

1 Nephi 22:30

"Wherefore, my brethren, I would that ye should consider that the things which have been written upon the plates of brass are true; and they testify that a man must be obedient to the commandments of God."

The Book of Mormon is true.  It is a good book, and if I follow the teachings within it I will be blessed. This book teaches that we all must keep the commandments of God. There is no other way to be truly happy.  I know that my life has been greatly blessed because I live in accordance to these commandments.

1 Nephi 20:10

"For, behold, I have refined thee, I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction."

This is a good one to remember when I am having a bad day. How I react to those hard times can make me a better person.

1 Nephi 16:28

"And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the pointers which were in the ball, that they did work according to the faith and diligence and heed which we did give unto them."

The ball is the liahona, a sort of compass given to them miraculously. This ball would only work when they listened to it. It is the same with modern day revelation. I can only get more knowledge when I heed what I already have.

1 Nephi 12: 11

"... And the angel said unto me: These are made white in the blood of the Lamb, because of their faith in him."

Christ suffered for us all. We can all repent and be forgiven of our sins if we have faith that Christ is our Savior. Faith is a power, and many things can happen with faith. Miracles cannot happen without the presence of faith. We can be clean again through this wonderful power. Christ gives us that ability.

1 Nephi 11:22-23

"And I answered him, saying: Yea, it is the love of God, which sheddeth itself abroad in the hearts of the children of men; wherefore, it is the most desirable above all things.
And he spake unto me, saying: Yea, and the most joyous to the soul."

The Spirit of the Lord is showing Nephi the things he desires to know after Nephi had pondered the things his father, Lehi, saw. Nephi learns that the tree in Lehi's dream represents the love of God.  Nephi says that this love "sheddeth itself abroad." When Christ suffered in Gethsemane, he "shed" his blood for us all. It is interesting that the use of the word "sheddeth" alludes to the Savior shedding his blood.  The atonement was a pure act of love, and in so doing this the Savior shed love to every person.
I also love how the Spirit describes the love of God as being "most joyous to the soul." Doesn't that sound wonderful? I cannot think of anything that would give me more joy than to have the love of God always with me. I can feel that love at all times when I act as He wants me to. That is what brings true joy.

Alma 57:35

"And behold, we are again delivered out of the hands of our enemies. And blessed is the name of our God; for behold, it is he that has delivered us; yea, that has done this great thing for us."

The Nephites give credit to God for their success in battle. They are humble enough to realize that they did not fight alone. I admire their humility and faithfulness.

1 Nephi 10:18

"For he is the same yesterday, to-day, and forever; and the way is prepared for all men from the foundation of the world, if it so be that they repent and come unto him."

God is the same. His plan is the same. Nothing about him changes. His gospel does not change, so we must always repent to have salvation. That will always be the requisite.

1 Nephi 8:28

"And after they had tasted of the fruit they were ashamed, because of those that were scoffing at them; and they fell away into forbidden paths and were lost."

There are many people today who taste the fruit of the gospel and feel the love of Christ in their lives. But later they turn away from it because of the temptations of the world. They fall into bad, sometimes devastating, habits and no longer feel that love. We all need to be so careful that we do not fall away into forbidden paths.

1 Nephi 6:6

"Wherefore, I shall give commandment unto my seed, that they shall not occupy these plates with things which are not of worth unto the children of men."

Nephi says that the Book of Mormon is full of things that are of worth. I think that makes it important to read and reread that book.

1 Nephi 4:6

"And I was led by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things which I should do."

Nephi was so close to the Spirit that he received inspiration on the spot. How awesome! It is so neat that this is possible.  The Lord wants us to know His will, so we must be worthy of the Spirit so He can tell us what to do.

1 Nephi 3:7

"And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them."

I love this scripture!  I love the faith Nephi has and how he knows his father is truly asking him to do the Lord's commands. The Lord will provide a way. His commands seems hard, but they are doable!

1 Nephi 1:20

"... But behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance."

The brief explanation of the Book of Mormon tells about the different plates that make up the book. It took so much time and effort to engrave those plates, but so many prophet-historians did. They were chosen of God to make these plates because God knew they would do it. God's wishes will happen, and He uses people to complete His will. I want Him to be able to count on me, so I must follow His commands.  This verse says that Nephi writes to show me the tender mercies of the Lord to the faithful. I want those in my life, and I know that I will have them as I remain faithful and do what He wants me to do.

20 And they were all young men, and they were exceedingly valiant for acourage, and also for strength and activity; but behold, this was not all—they were men who were true at all times in whatsoever thing they were entrusted.
21 Yea, they were men of truth and asoberness, for they had been taught to keep the commandments of God and to bwalk uprightly before him.

These men were so awesome! I love all the qualities they have, especially that they were 'true at all times in whatsoever they were entrusted.'

Moroni 10:3

"Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts."

Moroni wants us to read the Book of Mormon and to ponder how merciful the Lord has been throughout time. The Lord loves his children and will never stop loving them. There are so many examples of His love in this book, especially as He shows so much mercy. I want to ponder these things and feel His mercy in my own life.

Moroni 8:18

"For I know that God is not a partial God, neither a changeable being; but he is unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity."

God would not be God if he changed.  He is the same today as He always has, meaning that His Gospel is unchanging. He is a constant source of truth and will never leave.

Moroni 7:47

"But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him."

Charity is acting as Jesus would, with complete love. No grudging thoughts or poor intentions; rather genuine joy in serving others.

Moroni 1:3

"And I, Moroni, will not deny the Christ; wherefore, I wander whithersoever I can for the safety of mine own life."

How powerful is this statement! Moroni lives in a time where anyone who won't deny Christ is killed.  He alone remains as a Christian, so he has to live in hiding.  While he is hiding, he abridges scriptures-precious records that we have today because of him. He also writes the sacramental prayers and the manner of priesthood ordination. While reading the first few chapters of Moroni today I imagined the Nephites living as I do today.  Their church was organized exactly how ours is organized today. It is so incredible to think about and imagine. It makes me feel like I am part of something big. Something that has not changed, and won't change because it is how Christ organized it. He is the head, and He know what works best because it's how it's always worked. I know this!

Alma 50:12

"Thus Moroni, with his armies, which did increase daily because of the assurance of protection which his works did bring forth unto them, did seek to cut off the strength and the power of the Lamanites from off the lands of their possessions, that they should have no power upon the lands of their possession."

I love that Moroni's armies increased daily.  The zeal for freedom was extreme in these times, and so many people wanted to have safety. It is so important to believe in freedom enough to fight for it and defend it daily.

Matthew 7:12

"Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them; for this is the law and the prophets."

The golden rule. Treat others how you want to be treated.

Ether 13:22

"And it came to pass that Coriantumr repented not, neither his household, neither the people; and the wars ceased not; and they sought to kill Ether, but he fled from before them and hid again in the cavity of the rock."

This is right after Ether prophesies to Coriantumr that if he does not repent his whole civilization will be destroyed except for him. He alone will survive to witness the death of everyone he knows. Coriantumr does not repent, and sadly this prophecy indeed comes to pass.

Ether 12:41

"And now, I would commend you to seek this Jesus of whom the prophets and apostles have written, that the grace of God the Father, and also the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost, which beareth record of them, may be and abide in you forever. Amen."

Moroni, realizing that his time in running out, asks readers to seek Jesus.  Moroni knows the true source of happiness and he wants everyone to find it. By following Christ, we can have God's grace with us.

Ether 10:33

"And in the days of Com there began to be robbers in the land; and they adopted the old plans, and administered oaths after the manner of the ancients, and sought again to destroy the kingdom."

This part of Ether is all about how King after King and war after war the people still remained in wickedness. The secret oaths came back and they threw out the prophets. It's sad to see the decay of righteousness and witness a nation being destroyed because of pride, selfishness, and the desire to get gain.

Ether 9:22

"And after he had anointed Coriantum to reign in his stead he lived four years, and he saw peace in the land; yea, and he even saw the Son of Righteousness, and did rejoice and glory in his day; and he died in peace."

This verse stood out to me today because it sounds so wonderful! I would love to be able to say that I helped establish peace in the land because of my righteousness.  It would be so special and amazing to have the privilege of seeing the Son of Righteousness and beholding His glory while on the earth. It would be so nice to die in peace. This is the goal and it makes following the gospel each day worth it!

Ether 4:12

"And whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do good is of me; for good cometh of none save it be of me. I am the same that leadeth men to all good; he that will not believe my words will not believe me - that I am; and he that will not believe me will not believe the Father who sent me, For behold, I am the Father, I am the light, and the life, and the truth of the world."

All good things come of Christ. Those who don't believe Him will not believe anything of Him. Those who do not believe His words do not really believe Him.  They do not know that He is the truth, light, and life of the world, and that He is the Father.

Ether 2:25

"...Therefore what will ye that I should prepare for you that ye may have light when ye are swallowed up in the depths of the sea?"

Here the Lord is asking the brother of Jared what he wants Him to do. God doesn't just give us answers sometimes. We had to figure things out for ourselves and then ask if it is right. He wants us to use our agency and choose ourselves so we can decide if we want to follow Him.

Thursday, September 5, 2013

Ether 1:34

"...Cry unto the Lord..."

In this chapter this phrase if found at least four times. Jared urged his brother to "cry unto the Lord" so that his language would not be confounded and that they would be guided to a promised land. They were blessed with what they asked the Lord. The Lord saved these people from the confounding at the Tower of Babel and led them to the promised land.  The Lord hears and answers prayers of the faithful.

Mormon 9:34

"But the Lord knoweth the things which we have written, and also that none other people knoweth our language; and because that none other people knoweth our language, therefore he hath prepared means for the interpretation thereof."

The Lord knows everything.  He knows what is happening now and what will happen. It is no shock that the Lord knew how to preserve these scriptures. He can perform all miracles, and He did as Joseph Smith translated the plates into the Book of Mormon.

Mormon 7:9

"For behold, this is written for the intent that ye may believe that; and if ye believe that ye will believe this also; and if ye believe this ye will know concerning your fathers, and also the marvelous works which were wrought by the power of God among them."

The Book of Mormon (this) and Bible (that) are complementary. If you really believe the Bible, you will also believe the Book of Mormon. Reading both books helps us understand the history of prophets and the miracles wrought by God's power in past days. I am so grateful to have both books of scripture today.

Alma 45:3

"And Helaman said unto him: Yea, I believe."

Helaman answers Alma, his father, with this simple phrase.  In this proclamation Helaman affirms his belief in his father's words; the words of a true prophet.  Helaman shows his faithfulness and devotion to living the gospel just as his father had.

Friday, August 30, 2013

20 And these things doth the Spirit manifest unto me; therefore I write unto you all. And for this cause I write unto you, that ye may know that ye must all stand before the judgment-seat of Christ, yea, every soul who belongs to the whole human family of Adam; and ye must stand to be judged of your works, whether they be good or evil;
21 And also that ye may believe the gospel of Jesus Christ, which ye shall have among you; and also that the Jews, the covenant people of the Lord, shall have other witness besides him whom they saw and heard, that Jesus, whom they slew, was the very Christ and the very God.
22 And I would that I could persuade all ye ends of the earth to repent and prepare to stand before the judgment-seat of Christ."

Mormon here describes the purposes of his writings.  They are:
1) To tell the whole human family that they will be judged by their works.
2) That all may believe the gospel of Jesus Christ.
3) That the Jews will have another witness that Jesus is the Christ and Savior of the world
4) To persuade all people to repent, thus being prepared for the inevitable judgement.
These are all unselfish reasons. I can tell that Mormon really loved the people and wanted them to be on good standings with the Lord.

Mormon 2:13

"But behold this my joy was vain, for their sorrowing was not unto repentance, because of the goodness of God; but it was rather the sorrowing of the damned, because the Lord would not always suffer them to take happiness in sin."

It's so sad that these people were so lost that they could not turn unto God to seek peace. They were so far away from the Spirit that they would not humble themselves. Their pride brought sorrow and lamentation.

4 Nephi verses 10-11

"And now, behold, it came to pass that the people of Nephi did wax strong, and did multiply exceedingly fast, and became an exceedingly fair and delightsome people.
And they were married, and given in marriage, and were blessed according to the multitude of the promises which the Lord had made unto them."

The Nephites lived the gospel and so were blessed.  I like how their strength is accorded to the many marriages that happened. Strength comes when there are families on the earth who love each other and live righteously. The family is so necessary in our day to preserve strength. To arm ourselves against the deceits of the destroyer. To have a place of refuge, a place where the teachings of Jesus are taught, discussed, and lived. I want my family to be like this and I am glad I was raised like this.

3 Nephi 28:10-11

"...and ye shall be even as I am, and I am even as the Father; and the Father and I are one;

And the Holy Ghost beareth record of the Father and me; and the Father giveth the Holy Ghost unto the children of men, because of me."

These verses explain the relationships of the Godhead. The Father and the Son are one, meaning that they are one in purpose. The Holy Ghost ministers unto men because of the Father and the Son.

Alma 42:29

"And now, my son, I desire that ye should let these things trouble you no more, and only let your sins trouble you, with that trouble which shall bring you down unto repentance."

I love this verse.  It simple explains that I should not worry about how others are acting or any other thing that I cannot control.  What I should worry about are my own sins and the need I have to repent and become clean before my Maker.  There's no point worrying about the unknown.  I jest need to exercise faith in those matters and focus on cleansing myself.

3 Nephi 22

3 Nephi 22:17

"No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper..."

This is referring to persecution against the Church.  Throughout its history terrible things have happened. Though mobs don't storm against the Church today, there are many ideas against the Church that lead people astray. Things that may seem to harm the spread of the Gospel. Here though, Christ promises that none of these things will prosper.

3 Nephi 17

3 Nephi 17:6

"And he said unto them: Behold, my bowels are filled with compassion towards you."

After teaching the people, Jesus was ready to head back to his Father for a time.  The people did not want him to go though. Jesus sensed this and told them he was filled with compassion for them, so he stayed for a while longer. Jesus blessed their children, prayed for them, and did so many meaningful things for them. How wonderful that would have been!

3 Nephi 16

3 Nephi 16:17

"And then the words of the prophet Isaiah shall be fulfilled..."

Christ testifies that the words of the prophet Isaiah shall be fulfilled. Like all prophets, Isaiah speaks the words of Christ. Those prophesies will all come to pass in due time.

3 Nephi 15

3 Nephi 15:17

"That other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd."

Jesus Christ did not set up multiple churches;rather he made one church.  Why would there need to be different churches in different places in the world? That church was lost after He died, but it was restored through Joseph Smith. Jesus Christ is the head of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is His church. He is our shepherd and we are of His fold.

3 Nephi 9

3 Nephi 9:2

Wo, wo, wo unto this people; wo unto the inhabitants of the whole earth except they shall repent; for the devil laugheth, and his angels rejoice, because of the slain of the fair sons and daughters of my people; and it is because of their iniquity and abominations that they are fallen!"

Christ has been slain and His voice calms those in the Americas.  Much destruction befell the lands and in this verse Christ describes why. The devil swayed people to follow him and he did not care at all when they were destroyed. The Lord cares so much about His "fair sons and daughters" yet the "devil laugheth, and his angels rejoice".  Why would anyone follow the devil who rejoices in downfall?

3 Nephi 3

3 Nephi 3:19

"Now it was custom among all the Nephites to appoint for their chief captains, (save it were in their times of wickedness) some one that had the spirit of revelation and also prophecy; therefore, this Gidgiddoni was a great prophet among them, as also was the chief judge."

Who better to lead the people than someone who receives direct revelation? I am grateful to have a Prophet at the head of the Church today who continually receives revelations from God. It is such a blessing and comfort.  I know that if I am following the Prophet that I am doing alright!

3 Nephi 1

3 Nephi 1:19

"And it came to pass that there was no darkness in all that night, but it was as light as thought it was mid-day. And it came to pass that the sun did rise in the morning again, according to its proper order; and they knew that it was the day that the Lord should be born, because of the sign which had been given."

According to prophecy, the night before Christ was born there was no darkness in the night.  With Christ's birth He brought so much light and truth into the world.  As our Savior and Redeemer he acted completely out of love.  What a glorious event!

Helaman 16

Helaman 16:13

"But it came to pass in the ninetieth year of the reign of the judges, there were great signs given unto the people, and wonders; and the words of the prophets began to be fulfilled."

Just before this Samuel the Lamanite and Nephi were preaching and prophesying great things that will happen when Christ comes.  I love how 2 years before Christ's birth some of these things were being fulfilled and were written down as scripture. All prophecies from true Prophets will come to pass because they come from God.

Helaman 13

Helaman 13:14

"But behold, it is for the righteous' sake that it is spared. But behold, the time cometh, saith the Lord, that when ye shall cast out the righteous from among you, then shall ye be ripe for destruction; yea, wo be unto this great city, because of the wickedness and abominations which are in her."

Cities, countries, and sometimes entire civilizations are destroyed when there is no longer righteousness among them. The Lord destroys when wickedness prevails. He always warns through Prophets and gives the chance for repentance. But when these warnings are not heeded He then acts.

Helaman 11

Helaman 11:36

"And in the eighty and second year they began again to forget the Lord their God. And in the eighty and third year they began to wax strong in iniquity. And in the eighty and forth year they did not mend their ways."

The people were growing more and more wicked. As they continually did not repent they became more lost and farther from the Spirit. When repentance is delayed it is so much harder to change.

Helaman 9

Helaman 9:37

"And it came to pass that they went and did, even according as Nephi had said unto them. And behold, the words which he had said were true; for according to the words he did deny; and also according to the words he did confess."

Nephi prophesied concerning the murder of the chief judge.  Nephi knew that the chief judge's brother was responsible for the murder and knew how the murderer would reply to the accusation. All Nephi's prophecies came to pass because he truly received this knowledge from God.  When a Prophet of God gives counsel or predicts something, it's a good idea to listen because what they say will happen.

Monday, July 15, 2013

Helaman 8

Helaman 8:9

"Yea, and behold, if he had not been a prophet he could not have testified concerning those things."

Prophets have power to testify and teach what God wants them to.  If Nephi were not a prophet, if he did not have the Priesthood and was living worthily, the Lord would not have used him as a mouthpiece to the Nephites.

Saturday, July 13, 2013

Helaman 6

Helaman 6:35

"And thus we see that the Spirit of the Lord began to withdraw from the Nephites, because of the wickedness and the hardness of their hearts."

This is why it is so important to repent. Having the Holy Ghost as a companion brings safety, comfort, and many blessings. Without the Holy Ghost those companionships leave. I have been blessed so many times by having the Holy Ghost with me and I never want it to leave.

Helaman 5

Helaman 5:30

"And it came to pass when they heard this voice, and beheld that it was not a voice of thunder, neither was it a voice of a great tumultuous noise, but behold, it was a still voice of perfect mildness, as if it had been a whisper, and it did pierce even to the very soul-"

The voice of God is not scary or loud.  Rather it is mild, still, and piercing.  He is loving and kind, gentle and merciful.  He does not always seem this way to the wicked and sinful, but He is.

Tuesday, July 9, 2013

Helaman 3

Helaman 3:27

"Thus we may see that the Lord is merciful unto all who will, in the sincerity of their hearts, call upon his holy name."

The Lord is very merciful and full of love.  He wants us to be happy, but he knows that we will make mistakes along the way.  Thus he provides repentance and will forgive us as we seek it in sincerity.

Helaman 2

Helaman 2:13

"And behold, in the end of this book ye shall see that this Gadianton did prove the overthrow, yea, almost the entire destruction of the people of Nephi."

Gadianton, a leader of secret evil works, caused a whole people to be destroyed.  One person can cause so much change, whether good or bad. When wickedness prevails destruction follows.

Helaman 1

Helaman 1:18

"And it came to pass that because of so much contention and so much difficulty in the government, that they had not kept sufficient guards in the land of Zarahemla; for they had supposed that the Lamanites durst not come into the heart of the their lands to attack that great city Zarahemla."

Due to contention and upset within the government the Nephites were unprepared for a Lamanite attack.  They lost focus of defending their liberty and lost their great city.  It is important not to become too casual or too at ease.  Preparation is always a good idea.

Alma 63

Alma 63:2

"And he was a just man, and he did walk uprightly before God; and he did observe to do good continually, to keep the commandments of the Lord his God; and also did his brother."

This is the description for Helaman.  I hope to be known for these same qualities some day!

Alma 62

Alma 62:35

"...Teancum; for he was exceedingly angry with Ammoron, insomuch that he considered that Ammoron, and Amalickiah his brother, had been the cause of this great and lasting war..."

Teancum acted out of anger.  His cause may have been a good one, but since he acted out of anger he did not act righteously.  This anger led to his death.  From this we learn that it is never a good idea to do something when we are angry because we'll regret it and it may cause devastating results.

Alma 61:9

Alma 61:9

"And now, in your epistle you have censured me, but it mattereth not; I am not angry, but do rejoice in the greatness of your heart. I, Pahoran, do not seek for power, save only to retain my judgementseat that I may preserve the rights and the liberty of my people. My soul standeth fast in that liberty in the which God hath made us free."

There are so many things I love about this verse.  I love how Pahoran does not get angry with Moroni for his harsh criticism.  I love how humble Pahoran is and how he does not seek to be powerful or prideful.  I love how he rejoices in liberty and recognizes that God is the source of his liberty.  There are so many things I can learn from Pahoran's leadership and faith in God.

Alma 60:21

Alma 60:21

"Or do ye suppose that the Lord will still deliver us, while we sit upon our thrones and do not make use of the means which the Lord has provided for us?"

Moroni asks this question because he thinks the government is not doing anything to defend the people.  Moroni knows that the Lord does not like idleness and requires us to act.  We cannot expect Him to give us whatever we want, rather He wants us to work for it and use what He has given us.

Alma 59

Alma 59:9

"And now as Moroni had supposed that there should be men sent to the city of Nephihah, to the assistance of the people to maintain that city, and knowing that it was easier to keep the city from falling into the hands of the Lamanites that to retake it from them, he supposed that they would easily maintain that city."

Moroni understood that it was easier to maintain a city than to regain it.  The same goes for life.  It is so much easier to remain on the straight and narrow than to fall away and try to come back.  The risk of becoming lost and possibly not finding the light is too high.  It is so much better and easier to remain faithful to the gospel, to pray and study everyday so that the Holy Ghost remains with you and guides you in the right way.

Alma 58:40

"But behold, they have received many wounds; nevertheless they stand fast in that liberty wherewith God has made them free; and they are strict to remember the Lord their God from day to day; yea, they do observe to keep his statutes, and his judgements, and his commandments continually; and their faith is strong in the prophecies concerning that which is to come."

Even though they received many wounds they were still faithful and strong in their faith.  They did not stop keeping the commandments daily and this helped strengthen them and comfort them.  Many hardships come, but staying firm in the gospel will bring peace and happiness.

Alma 57:21

"Yea, and they did obey and observe to perform every word of command with exactness; yea, and even according to their faith it was done unto them..."

Obedience with exactness brings blessings.  It's not good enough to be almost completely obedient.  But, when we make mistakes we can repent and get back on the path of exact obedience.

"47 Now they never had fought, yet they did not fear death; and they did think more upon the aliberty of their bfathers than they did upon their lives; yea, they had been taught by their cmothers, that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them.
48 And they rehearsed unto me the words of their amothers, saying: We bdo not doubt our mothers knew it."
These verses stuck out to me today because I am a new mom.  I want my son to say someday that I taught him well.  I want him to make good choices that will lead to his happiness because I taught him to do that and lived as a good example to him.  I don't say this to be vain or proud of it, but to be relieved.  I would feel horrible if my little boy did not learn what I was supposed to teach him.
