3 Nephi 3

3 Nephi 3:19

"Now it was custom among all the Nephites to appoint for their chief captains, (save it were in their times of wickedness) some one that had the spirit of revelation and also prophecy; therefore, this Gidgiddoni was a great prophet among them, as also was the chief judge."

Who better to lead the people than someone who receives direct revelation? I am grateful to have a Prophet at the head of the Church today who continually receives revelations from God. It is such a blessing and comfort.  I know that if I am following the Prophet that I am doing alright!

3 Nephi 1

3 Nephi 1:19

"And it came to pass that there was no darkness in all that night, but it was as light as thought it was mid-day. And it came to pass that the sun did rise in the morning again, according to its proper order; and they knew that it was the day that the Lord should be born, because of the sign which had been given."

According to prophecy, the night before Christ was born there was no darkness in the night.  With Christ's birth He brought so much light and truth into the world.  As our Savior and Redeemer he acted completely out of love.  What a glorious event!

Helaman 16

Helaman 16:13

"But it came to pass in the ninetieth year of the reign of the judges, there were great signs given unto the people, and wonders; and the words of the prophets began to be fulfilled."

Just before this Samuel the Lamanite and Nephi were preaching and prophesying great things that will happen when Christ comes.  I love how 2 years before Christ's birth some of these things were being fulfilled and were written down as scripture. All prophecies from true Prophets will come to pass because they come from God.

Helaman 13

Helaman 13:14

"But behold, it is for the righteous' sake that it is spared. But behold, the time cometh, saith the Lord, that when ye shall cast out the righteous from among you, then shall ye be ripe for destruction; yea, wo be unto this great city, because of the wickedness and abominations which are in her."

Cities, countries, and sometimes entire civilizations are destroyed when there is no longer righteousness among them. The Lord destroys when wickedness prevails. He always warns through Prophets and gives the chance for repentance. But when these warnings are not heeded He then acts.

Helaman 11

Helaman 11:36

"And in the eighty and second year they began again to forget the Lord their God. And in the eighty and third year they began to wax strong in iniquity. And in the eighty and forth year they did not mend their ways."

The people were growing more and more wicked. As they continually did not repent they became more lost and farther from the Spirit. When repentance is delayed it is so much harder to change.

Helaman 9

Helaman 9:37

"And it came to pass that they went and did, even according as Nephi had said unto them. And behold, the words which he had said were true; for according to the words he did deny; and also according to the words he did confess."

Nephi prophesied concerning the murder of the chief judge.  Nephi knew that the chief judge's brother was responsible for the murder and knew how the murderer would reply to the accusation. All Nephi's prophecies came to pass because he truly received this knowledge from God.  When a Prophet of God gives counsel or predicts something, it's a good idea to listen because what they say will happen.

Helaman 8

Helaman 8:9

"Yea, and behold, if he had not been a prophet he could not have testified concerning those things."

Prophets have power to testify and teach what God wants them to.  If Nephi were not a prophet, if he did not have the Priesthood and was living worthily, the Lord would not have used him as a mouthpiece to the Nephites.

Helaman 6

Helaman 6:35

"And thus we see that the Spirit of the Lord began to withdraw from the Nephites, because of the wickedness and the hardness of their hearts."

This is why it is so important to repent. Having the Holy Ghost as a companion brings safety, comfort, and many blessings. Without the Holy Ghost those companionships leave. I have been blessed so many times by having the Holy Ghost with me and I never want it to leave.

Helaman 5

Helaman 5:30

"And it came to pass when they heard this voice, and beheld that it was not a voice of thunder, neither was it a voice of a great tumultuous noise, but behold, it was a still voice of perfect mildness, as if it had been a whisper, and it did pierce even to the very soul-"

The voice of God is not scary or loud.  Rather it is mild, still, and piercing.  He is loving and kind, gentle and merciful.  He does not always seem this way to the wicked and sinful, but He is.

Helaman 3

Helaman 3:27

"Thus we may see that the Lord is merciful unto all who will, in the sincerity of their hearts, call upon his holy name."

The Lord is very merciful and full of love.  He wants us to be happy, but he knows that we will make mistakes along the way.  Thus he provides repentance and will forgive us as we seek it in sincerity.

Helaman 2

Helaman 2:13

"And behold, in the end of this book ye shall see that this Gadianton did prove the overthrow, yea, almost the entire destruction of the people of Nephi."

Gadianton, a leader of secret evil works, caused a whole people to be destroyed.  One person can cause so much change, whether good or bad. When wickedness prevails destruction follows.

Helaman 1

Helaman 1:18

"And it came to pass that because of so much contention and so much difficulty in the government, that they had not kept sufficient guards in the land of Zarahemla; for they had supposed that the Lamanites durst not come into the heart of the their lands to attack that great city Zarahemla."

Due to contention and upset within the government the Nephites were unprepared for a Lamanite attack.  They lost focus of defending their liberty and lost their great city.  It is important not to become too casual or too at ease.  Preparation is always a good idea.

Alma 63

Alma 63:2

"And he was a just man, and he did walk uprightly before God; and he did observe to do good continually, to keep the commandments of the Lord his God; and also did his brother."

This is the description for Helaman.  I hope to be known for these same qualities some day!

Alma 62

Alma 62:35

"...Teancum; for he was exceedingly angry with Ammoron, insomuch that he considered that Ammoron, and Amalickiah his brother, had been the cause of this great and lasting war..."

Teancum acted out of anger.  His cause may have been a good one, but since he acted out of anger he did not act righteously.  This anger led to his death.  From this we learn that it is never a good idea to do something when we are angry because we'll regret it and it may cause devastating results.

Alma 61:9

Alma 61:9

"And now, in your epistle you have censured me, but it mattereth not; I am not angry, but do rejoice in the greatness of your heart. I, Pahoran, do not seek for power, save only to retain my judgementseat that I may preserve the rights and the liberty of my people. My soul standeth fast in that liberty in the which God hath made us free."

There are so many things I love about this verse.  I love how Pahoran does not get angry with Moroni for his harsh criticism.  I love how humble Pahoran is and how he does not seek to be powerful or prideful.  I love how he rejoices in liberty and recognizes that God is the source of his liberty.  There are so many things I can learn from Pahoran's leadership and faith in God.

Alma 60:21

Alma 60:21

"Or do ye suppose that the Lord will still deliver us, while we sit upon our thrones and do not make use of the means which the Lord has provided for us?"

Moroni asks this question because he thinks the government is not doing anything to defend the people.  Moroni knows that the Lord does not like idleness and requires us to act.  We cannot expect Him to give us whatever we want, rather He wants us to work for it and use what He has given us.

Alma 59

Alma 59:9

"And now as Moroni had supposed that there should be men sent to the city of Nephihah, to the assistance of the people to maintain that city, and knowing that it was easier to keep the city from falling into the hands of the Lamanites that to retake it from them, he supposed that they would easily maintain that city."

Moroni understood that it was easier to maintain a city than to regain it.  The same goes for life.  It is so much easier to remain on the straight and narrow than to fall away and try to come back.  The risk of becoming lost and possibly not finding the light is too high.  It is so much better and easier to remain faithful to the gospel, to pray and study everyday so that the Holy Ghost remains with you and guides you in the right way.

Alma 58:40

"But behold, they have received many wounds; nevertheless they stand fast in that liberty wherewith God has made them free; and they are strict to remember the Lord their God from day to day; yea, they do observe to keep his statutes, and his judgements, and his commandments continually; and their faith is strong in the prophecies concerning that which is to come."

Even though they received many wounds they were still faithful and strong in their faith.  They did not stop keeping the commandments daily and this helped strengthen them and comfort them.  Many hardships come, but staying firm in the gospel will bring peace and happiness.
